Top notes are the initial, first impression of a perfume—they are the scents you smell immediately after spraying. Their primary purpose is to grab attention, set the tone for the fragrance, and create an instant connection with the wearer. However, they are volatile (easily evaporate) and typically last only 5–15 minutes before fading to reveal the next layer.

Heart notes emerge once the top notes evaporate, usually after 15–30 minutes, and form the “core identity” of the perfume. They are the "heart" of the fragrance—what defines its personality (e.g., floral, spicy, fruity) and how it makes the wearer feel. Heart notes last longer than top notes (2–4 hours) and act as a bridge between the bright top and rich base.

Base notes are the final layer, appearing after the heart notes fade (usually 4+ hours) and leaving a long-lasting impression (often 6–12 hours or more). They anchor the fragrance, adding depth, warmth, and longevity, and are what people remember most about a perfume (e.g., a "signature scent" is often defined by its base).
